MIDI (revision 20)
by Ian Luck
posted on 2024-11-02

Allows XMPlay to play MIDI files, including MUS/RMI/XMI formats, using SF2 and SFZ soundfonts (not included) to provide the sounds. Includes a lyrics/karaoke vis mode. A couple of SF2 soundfonts are available here and here.

It would be cool to enable swithing sounbanks, for example choose piano instead guitar, etc

Wow, Lee Jackson, the legend here! Listen to him and fix it!
It used to work before, but now it doesn't. Not sure why it's silent and the visualizer doesn't show anything too.

please consider adding support select midi output devices (i.e.loopMIDI)
Thank you

It's good, but better to have real midi out for more manipulation, like combining with loopMIDI and savihost, letting midi out through VST synth and/or instruments.

Tried exporting the midi file to wav, but the file isn't looped.

This is so awesome.
sounds very accurate and displays other detailed informations.
just successfully converted my midi files all while all the other online converters, downloaded converters, used a diffent sound font file or sounded weird,
fl studio was using dls file, not so sure about that.
but xmplay, so easy with this plug-in and LAME encoder and sf2 file to convert to mp3 file.
Thank you.

This version is bugged, Take Five by Roland Corporation plays incorrectly in comparrison with that older version which I had before (rev 10?). But I've replaced the older with this and I can't return it back. Where I can find older versions of this plugin? Please add link with all older versions.

Awesome plugin. It works with some good size .GM SF2 files which can have pretty realistic instruments. Especially like the mixer to optimize playback.

Does anyone have the OLD version of the midi plugin for XMPlay? I remember being able to load ".ecw" wave tables (ensoniq/sbpci128 sound font) back in the day. That support seems to have vanished. How can I get my ecws to play again? :(

How wonderful it would be if this plugin had a midi input...so that you could use it by XMplay itself or through another external midi player, i.e. VanBasco....

This version of midi plugin does not work with Aspirin_160_GMGS soundfont, for example, to play [Free-scores.com]_beethoven-ludwig-van-for-elise-549 midi file. The soundfont and midi files are available free from the internet and SynthFont plays the midi well with the soundfont.

Simply amazing! sounds better than my expander KETRON SD 20 ...
To achieve perfection is still lacking a few details that are seemingly unimportant, but I find fundamental to the use of live midi.
1) would be nice to skip the 2 or 3 empty bars at the beginning that there are files, and slow songs that can produce up to 15 seconds of silence before the start of endless music. (see vanbasco)
2) the visualizzazzioine 2 lines of text makes it much more fluid the alternate reading (see vanbasco).
3) it does not display text during the instrumental parts of the song, only to reappear when it should be sung is very convenient when you are not familiar with the structure of the song (see vanbasco).
4) many MIDI songs contain chords of the song ... would be nice to see them in line under the words.
Anyway, thanks for what has been and will be done!

Simply the world's best 27kb of code! Finally someting simple and light that can really makes hardware synths not needed anymore if you just want to listen to music. works perfectly and loads soundfonts faster than anything I ever tested and can run on really crappy hardware and cpu without problems! congratulations!

I absolutely love this plugin! But I do have a few suggestions for your next revision...

While I prefer this over foobar2000's MIDI, there is one thing foobar can do that this one doesn't: foobar can detect loop points from CC 116 and 117 as well as loopStart/loopEnd markers.

Also, when auto-selecting drum patches when an empty one is detected, can you have it so that it selects the next PATCH back instead of always going to BANK 0? Especially, if it's already on bank 0, it goes to patch 0, when, like I said, it should search back for the next available patch.

And one more thing, like some others are saying, it actually doesn't read ALL MIDI types, but usually obscure ones. Then again, I am trying to find a program that will play, or better yet edit, them!

Keep up the good work, Ian!

Hello, this is an awesome plugin, I just hope that you can add better support for lyrics (font color, smooth scrolling) and it will be perfect, thanks!!!

Works fine for me. Good job.

#17 - Gene rated this file 4 stars on 2010-06-30, 20:21:34
Excellent plugin, but it could be downright cosmic. DarkBlood (argentina) said that it plays all kinds of midi files, and it doesn't--it will not play midi files using the MTS (midi tuning standard) and Timidity++ will. Adding this would be a terrific feature!

#16 - Steven rated this file 5 stars on 2010-05-04, 13:36:56
Good Plug in, but the SB XFI Midi playback is a better. The CPU load is higher when use the Reverb & chorus effects.

I am angry! I paid many bucks for a Soundblaster card when I could have had better results with XMPlay Midi!

#14 - Sevendy rated this file 5 stars on 2009-12-15, 15:44:55
Better polyphony than SB hardware synth! Much lower CPU load than another well-known software synth. Other than an occasional "pop", sounds great! One small problem: when overwriting a preset, all I can do is select the same number preset from a different SoundFont; is there any way to select an arbitrary preset?

#13 - tnt rated this file 5 stars on 2009-07-03, 20:49:10
Brilliant !!! I tried TONS of both commercial and non-commercial software for reproduction of MIDI files using soundfonts, but this 26,7 kb plugin (i have revision 8a) rules!!!! With appropriate sound fonts (e.g. Titanic 200, Conexant GM500 Alpha or Crisis General Midi 3.01) MIDI files sound great. CPU load is minimal and I didn't experience speed problems even on cheap integrated soundcard on my notebook.
Thank you !!!
I have some suggestions for further improvements:
- there is some room for improvement of lyrics display which is useful for karaoke (e.g. chosing of font size and colors, smoothing, scrolling, background etc.)
- it would be nice to have the possibility to change key/pitch and tempo during playback of MIDI files
- it would be useful to have buttons to mute/unmute separate midi channels (like in vanBasco karaoke player)
With above mentioned improvements xmplay together with this plugin will become unbeatable midi karaoke player !!!! After these improvements you should add five stars more for rating !!!!!!

download this soundfont (can play all midi files):

http://localhost.nl/stuff/SGM180v1.5.zip (79mb)
then run SGM-180 v1.5.sfArk to extract SGM-180 v1.5.sf2 (175mb) and finally add this sf2 file in the midi plugin.

Thanks to this plugin, I'm discovering the joy of MIDI. Fantastic :)
That SF2 you link to is a great help and sounds amazing.
Thank you!

The new configuration dialog box is such a mess, it should just ask for a single .sf2 file, and have some Advanced> button to set individual .sf2 for different banks or instruments. It's too confusing for people who don't need it.
Other than that, *great* plugin :)

Undoubtedly, not replaceable a thing. It would be desirable to see plug-in on mixing of tracks at transition.

Awesome! Now i don't even need a hardware midi synth to play midi files. I can't find anything else that can simply play midi with soundfonts without hardware.

#1 - Runefox rated this file 5 stars on 2006-07-06, 22:19:37
Absolutely amazing plugin, plays SF2's regardless of size with no delay and very little CPU/mem usage. Only drawback is lack of reverb/chorus
